For each gram of chlorothiazide prescribed, 2g of potassium chloride should be given and this should be taken on the days when chlorothiazide is not being given. The maximum effective dose of chlorothiazide is 2g daily by mouth and this is there poetically equivalent to 2 ml. of morally by intramuscular injection. The drug can be given in one dose at 8 a.m. or in divided doses at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. It is rapidly absorbed from the gastro intestinal tract and dieresis usually begins within two hours, reaching its maximum in four to six hours, and is largely completed in 12 hours. For the treatment of edema of mild to moderate severity 0.75-1.0 g. chlorothiazide is usually sufficient. Chlorothiazide or its derivatives should rarely be given on more than three days in the week. Some patients who are resistant to chlorothiazide may respond to morally and vice versa. In resistant cases, a combination of the two drugs given on the same day or on alternate days may be successful. Should this fail, aminophylline should be given in addition.
